Racine Quarry Community Advisory Group

July 1, 2006

Dear Neighbor,

My name is Gene Pagel. I live on Ellis Avenue, near the Vulcan Materials Company quarry, which has been in the area since the 1800s. Vulcan's run the operation since 1958. I'm writing to let you know about an important development in the history of the quarry and the neighboring communities of Caledonia and Racine.

In an effort to improve relations with its neighbors and strengthen its commitment to the community, earlier this year Vulcan committed to forming a community advisory group of residents to improve communications between its operation, neighbors and the communities of Caledonia and Racine. Basically, the group is a listening and sharing body to help the company respond to neighborhood concerns, to proactively inform the community of operational developments and to help the company improve its supportive role in our neighborhoods, schools and community organizations.

I am pleased to announce the members of the Racine Quarry Community Advisory Group, which is made up of seven community volunteers (two from Racine and five from Caledonia) and two company representatives. In late April, we confirmed our commitment to objectively help facilitate a productive dialogue and working relationship between the quarry and the community.

If you ever have any questions, concerns or ideas about the Racine Quarry, please don't hesitate to contact us at the Community Advisory Group Line (800) 673-0899. In the near future we'll be starting a quarterly newsletter, a website and will plan an informational meeting for the public. We also hope to announce several developments including the construction of a high-tech wheel wash to reduce dust track-out onto the roads and are working to resolve the "no trespass" issue on the land parcel in Racine adjacent to the soccer fields.

No employer is perfect - we all know that. Vulcan has promised us and promises you that it will be as responsive as possible to its neighbors and is working hard to continually strengthen this commitment. On behalf of the Racine Quarry Community Advisory Group, I thank you for your time and look forward to working together.

    Sincerely,

    Gene Pagel
    Chair
